We are are delighted to announce that Emma Cavell has won first prize in the Mortimer History Society's annual essay competition. Her entry, entitled 'Periphery to Core: Mortimer Women and the Negotiation of the King's Justice in the Thirteenth-Century March of Wales', looked at the use (and misuse!) of English central justice by mother-and-daughter team Maud Mortimer (d. 1301) and Isabel FitzAlan (d. 1292) - two legally active women of the rough-tumble 'peripheral' world of the Welsh Marches. The essay will appear in the Journal of the Mortimer History Society later this year. Stay tuned!
